Permits by category
General renovation contractors who carry out additions, kitchens, bathrooms and other modification work on residential buildings must have an RBQ license in categories 1.2 and 1.3.
A permit to be earned
Before issuing a license, the Régie checks whether the company’s directors have ever been involved in a bankruptcy. If so, the Régie may refuse to issue or renew a license. The RBQ can also suspend or cancel a license if one of the company’s directors has been or is involved in a bankruptcy. The Régie issues a license only after it is satisfied that the contractor has the necessary knowledge of the administrative, safety and technical aspects of the work covered by the license. The Régie verifies the company’s solvency. It requires a $40,000 bond to indemnify consumers in the event of fraud, embezzlement or misappropriation of funds.
