Choice of materials
What’s OUT. For reasons of LOOK and/or durability, standard melamine, laminate and thermoplastic cabinets are no longer sought-after choices. Melamine products are considered to have poor impact resistance, while thermoplastic-coated panels have poor resistance to steam and heat. This product is unsuitable for use over dishwashers or stoves. Today, cabinet makers prefer to talk about “polymer” doors, but essentially it’s still a standard thermoplastic. As for laminate, it’s a very good economical and durable choice for both countertops and backsplashes, but since it’s associated with melamine, customers prefer other products. This product will probably become popular again in the years to come. Unlike laminate, lacquered MDF is a much more sought-after product, but it is more expensive. People demand it because it’s available in all shapes and colors. Its ultra-satin finish also enhances its beauty. Wooden doors are always an excellent choice. Wood is strong and durable. It can be painted, stained or left natural, depending on fashion and use. It’s also the most environmentally-friendly material, from manufacturing to recycling. However, wood remains more expensive than other products.
Trends for 2019
The most popular choices for 2019 will probably be the same as in 2018.
- Brillante. This is a very high-density particleboard with a gloss or matte finish. Particleboard and its finish are highly resistant to moisture and heat. Its edge banding is also highly impact-resistant.
- Polyester. Polyester-coated chipboard offers the same design possibilities as polymer-thermoplastic, but without the drawbacks of thermoplastic.
- Lacquered MDF. This product stands out for its remarkable finish and the infinite range of colors and shades available.
Choice of design
In general, contemporary design with clean lines remains the first choice. Horizontal doors and horizontal Shaker-style drawers are the most sought-after.
The choice of colors
White remains the choice of the vast majority. It’s appreciated for its luminosity and blends perfectly with clean contemporary design. White is zen. White also enhances “noble” materials such as white, grey or black quartz countertops, wood floors, stainless steel fittings and other material inserts.
The price
There are many elements that influence the price of kitchen cabinets, including design, hardware and the many specialized accessories. Among good products, polyester remains the most economical, followed by Brillante. For a slightly higher price, lacquered MDF is available, followed by real wood products.
